KUSHIRO, Hokkaido, 21 January
A polar bear has returned to Kushiro Zoo, delighting visitors who are seeing the iconic Arctic animal there once again after nearly a year’s absence.
The zoo welcomed the public back on January 3 with the debut of Maruru, a 13-year-old female polar bear who is now on display. Her arrival marks the end of a long gap since the zoo last housed a polar bear.
Maruru was born in December 2012 at Sapporo’s Maruyama Zoo. She later relocated to Kumamoto City Zoo and Botanical Gardens in 2014, before moving to Kushiro Zoo in December of last year.
The zoo had been without a polar bear since November 2024, when Kiroru, a male bear, passed away. Maruru is his younger sibling.
At around 220 kilograms, Maruru is smaller than the average polar bear, but her charm is already winning hearts.
