JAPAN RAIL PASS

The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) is a special travel ticket created exclusively for tourists. It is valid across all intercity rail routes in Japan and allows unlimited travel on Shinkansen bullet trains (except Nozomi and Mizuho), as well as other trains operated by the Japan Railways Group.

If your itinerary includes visiting several cities, purchasing a JR Pass is much more cost-effective than buying individual tickets for each trip. In fact, the pass already pays for itself with a round-trip on the Shinkansen between Tokyo and Kyoto/Osaka, while all additional rides on JR lines are effectively free.

Who can use the JR Pass?
The JR Pass is only available for travelers visiting Japan for tourism purposes. To purchase the pass, the following conditions must be met:
  • Length of stay in Japan must not exceed 90 days.
  • You must have “Temporary Visitor” status in your passport.
Where is the JR Pass valid?
  • Railways: All JR Group trains, including Shinkansen (except Nozomi and Mizuho), limited express, express, rapid and local trains, plus some routes on Aoimori Railway, IR Ishikawa Railway, and Ainokaze Toyama Railway.
  • Buses: Local JR buses (Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Tokai, West Japan, Chugoku, Shikoku, Kyushu) and selected highway buses.
  • Ferry: JR Miyajima Ferry (Hiroshima – Miyajima).
The pass is not valid on monorails (e.g., Tokyo Monorail).

How to purchase and exchange your JR Pass
When you buy the pass abroad, you will receive an Exchange Order (voucher). This voucher must be exchanged for the actual JR Pass at a JR Exchange Office in Japan within 3 months of purchase.
At the time of exchange, you can choose the start date of validity (must be within 1 month from the exchange date). The start and end dates cannot be changed afterwards.
If lost, the pass cannot be reissued!

Seat reservations
  • Shinkansen and limited express trains offer both reserved and non-reserved seating.
  • Non-reserved seats: simply show your JR Pass when entering the platform.
  • Reserved seats: visit a JR Travel Service Center or ticket office (“Midori-no-madoguchi”) with your JR Pass to obtain a free reservation ticket (except for Nozomi and Mizuho).
During peak seasons (Dec 28–Jan 6, Apr 27–May 6, Aug 11–20), reservations may be difficult to obtain due to high demand.

Refunds and conditions
  • Unused vouchers may be refunded only at the office of issue within 1 year from purchase. A handling fee and 10% cancellation fee (in yen) will apply.
  • Once the JR Pass is activated, it cannot be refunded, extended, or reissued (in case of loss, theft, or transport delays).
  • The pass is strictly personal and non-transferable.
  • You must carry your passport while traveling and be ready to show it when requested.
All rules follow the official regulations of the Japan Railways Group.

How to receive the Japan Rail Pass in Japan
The JR Pass can be collected at an official JR Exchange Office within Japan. To obtain it, you must present your passport and the Exchange Order (voucher) issued at the time of purchase.
