This district, covering a large area in the heart of Kyoto, blends elements of both traditional and modern architecture. Here you’ll find impressive landmarks such as the Kyoto Imperial Garden and Nijo Castle, though modern shops and office buildings largely define its appearance.
Why stay in Central Kyoto?
While not the most common choice among tourists, this area offers several high-quality hotels conveniently located near subway stations. You’ll also find a wide range of restaurants serving both local and international cuisine.
The terrain here is mostly flat, making it ideal for walking and cycling – perfect for those who want to soak in the city’s atmosphere and cultural heritage.
What’s the catch?
Although Central Kyoto features several popular attractions like the Kyoto Imperial Palace and Nijo-jo Castle, you’ll still need to use public transport to reach other famous sites such as Higashiyama District.
Things to do in Central Kyoto
• Nijo Castle – An impressive fortress surrounded by massive walls, built by shoguns during the Edo period. The gardens are beautiful and illuminated at night. Visit early in the morning to avoid crowds.
• Kyoto Imperial Palace Park – The surrounding park is more impressive than the palace itself. Take a walk or bring a small picnic. It’s particularly stunning during cherry blossom season (late March).
• Daitoku-ji Temple – A must for garden lovers. This large temple complex includes 24 sub-temples and several exquisite Zen gardens – a perfect place to spend a quiet afternoon.
