Sakae (栄) is the vibrant downtown district of Nagoya, located about two kilometers east of Nagoya Station. It’s the city’s main shopping, dining, and entertainment hub – home to a mix of department stores, stylish boutiques, and countless restaurants catering to every taste and budget.
At the heart of the district lies Hisaya Odori Park, a green oasis stretching for over a kilometer along Hisaya Odori Avenue. The park has been recently redeveloped into an open-air shopping and dining complex, blending modern architecture with lush greenery. The area around the park is especially lively in the evening, with illuminated fountains and outdoor cafés.
One of Sakae’s most recognizable landmarks is the Chubu Electric Power MIRAI Tower (formerly Nagoya TV Tower). Completed in 1954, it was Japan’s first television tower and remains an iconic feature of the skyline. Following a major renovation between 2019 and 2020, the tower now includes a boutique hotel on its lower floors and an observation deck 100 meters above ground, offering panoramic views of the city.
Another architectural highlight is Oasis 21, a futuristic complex opened in 2002 that features a bus terminal, shops, restaurants, and an event space under its famous glass structure known as the “Water Spaceship.” The rooftop features a shallow pool that reflects the city lights, creating a unique nighttime atmosphere.
Beyond the major department stores like Maruei and Skyle, Sakae also offers luxury fashion boutiques and trendy streetwear shops, making it a must-visit destination for both shoppers and sightseers.
