The Atsuta Shrine, with over 1,900 years of history, is considered a spiritual power spot where visitors can feel a sense of healing energy. It is the second most revered Shinto shrine in Japan, ranking just below the Grand Shrine of Ise, and attracts about 6.5 million worshippers annually.
One of the shrine’s greatest treasures is the legendary Kusanagi Sword, one of Japan’s Three Sacred Imperial Regalia, which is said to be enshrined here. A walk through the sacred forest surrounding the shrine offers a serene and deeply spiritual atmosphere.
Just south of the shrine lies the historic Tokaido Road, once the main route connecting Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto. In the Miya-juku area, visitors can still explore historic sites such as the Shichiri Ferry Crossing, where samurai and travelers once traversed a 27-kilometer stretch of the route, and where Tokugawa clan warships were once docked.
No visit to this area would be complete without trying some of Nagoya’s most beloved local dishes – the silky Kishimen noodles and flavorful Hitsumabushi, grilled eel served over rice with condiments and broth.
