Tennoji & Abeno

Tennoji & Abeno

Tennoji, Osaka’s third major city center, has undergone a dramatic transformation in recent years – from a run-down district into a vibrant, modern area. One of its defining landmarks is the 300-meter-tall Abeno Harukas Tower, a gleaming symbol of the neighborhood’s renewal.

In the past, Tennoji was often associated with decline and neglect. At its heart lay Shinsekai (“New World”) – an entertainment quarter that, ironically, hadn’t been new for decades. With its retro Tsutenkaku Tower, old diners, and pachinko parlors, the area evoked nostalgia for pre-economic-boom Japan.

Today, the towering presence of Abeno Harukas has ushered in a new era. Stylish shops, restaurants, and hotels continue to open, while traditional attractions are being revived. You can easily spend an entire day here – enjoy panoramic city views from the tower, relax in the park and zoo, and explore Shinsekai’s colorful retro streets for a taste of old Osaka.

Things to See and Do

Abeno Harukas
Standing 300 meters tall above Kintetsu Abenobashi Station, Abeno Harukas is Osaka’s tallest skyscraper. Its observation deck, Harukas 300, spans the top three floors (58th–60th), offering breathtaking views over Osaka, Kobe, the Inland Sea, and even Wakayama. The panoramic night view is especially stunning.

Shinsekai
This nostalgic “New World” district retains its old-school Osaka charm. Though modernization is underway, the area remains filled with inexpensive eateries, pachinko parlors, and casual bars. It’s fun to simply wander its lively streets. You can also pair your visit with a stroll through nearby Tennoji Park.

Tennoji Park (Tennoji Koen)
Located northwest of Tennoji Station, this large urban park features a serene pond, a Buddhist temple, an art museum, and the city zoo. It’s one of Osaka’s best spots to unwind and enjoy a slower pace in the middle of the city.

Tennoji Zoo (Tennoji Dobutsuen)
Although not as modern as some international zoos, Tennoji Zoo remains a pleasant family attraction. It’s home to lions, tigers, red pandas, penguins, and rhinos, making it especially fun for children.

Shitenno-ji Temple
Located northeast of JR Tennoji Station, Shitenno-ji is one of Japan’s oldest temples, founded in 593. While most of its buildings are modern reconstructions, the temple’s spiritual atmosphere endures. It’s well worth a visit to experience this cornerstone of Japanese Buddhism.

Tennoji, located in southern Osaka, is a promising and rapidly developing district filled with shops, restaurants, and entertainment. Although its streets can feel more restrained compared to other areas, the sense of safety remains strong – as it does throughout Japan.

Because it’s less touristy than central Osaka, hotel prices here are often more affordable, making it an excellent choice for travelers seeking good value. The Midosuji Subway Line runs directly through the area, ensuring easy access to other parts of the city. With its balance of comfort, accessibility, and local flavor, Tennoji is becoming one of Osaka’s most appealing neighborhoods to explore and stay in.
