Nakamura Ward is known as the birthplace of several prominent historical figures, including Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a foot soldier who rose to become Japan’s supreme ruler during the medieval era, and the famed warrior Kato Kiyomasa. A museum dedicated to these heroic individuals is located just west of Nakamura Park.
At the heart of the park stands the Toyokuni Shrine, dedicated to Hideyoshi himself. Nearby, Arakogawa Park offers beautiful scenery, especially during lavender season when its fields come into full bloom.
One of the area’s main attractions is the Arako Kannon Temple, home to a Buddhist pagoda that is considered the oldest surviving structure in Nagoya, dating back to 1536.
Just a few minutes’ walk from Nagoya Station, you’ll find Endoji Shopping Street, the city’s oldest covered arcade. It retains the nostalgic postwar atmosphere of old Nagoya while incorporating a touch of modern charm with trendy shops and cafes.
