Kanazawa is famous for its gold leaf craftsmanship, a tradition that began over 400 years ago. Originally, gold leaf was used to cover statues and temples—the Golden Pavilion in Kyoto is adorned with gold leaf from Kanazawa. Today, this delicate material decorates a wide variety of items, including jewelry, accessories, furniture, tableware, and even desserts. Tiny amounts of gold dust are also added to cosmetics, coffee, and ice cream, as many locals believe in the benefits of consuming microscopic doses of this precious metal.
Join this tradition and create your own souvenir using gold leaf. You can gild a small plate, chopsticks, a tray, a mirror, or a box. The instructor will guide you in applying a design of your choice to your item. The workshop lasts 20–35 minutes, and your finished piece will bring joy long after your trip to Japan.
Note: Guide accompaniment is required.
