Gyokusen-en is the former residence of a samurai clan and a strolling garden with a pond, located in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. The garden is home to Kanazawa’s oldest tea house, Kosetsutei. During the early Edo period, Naokata Wakita, a samurai serving the Maeda clan, began constructing the Wakita residence, a project that continued for a century. The garden is named after the official wife of Maeda Toshinaga, Gyokusenin.
Today, the samurai residence operates as an authentic restaurant with a traditional Japanese garden, serving original kaiseki meals. Kaiseki here is a multi-course lunch or dinner featuring seasonal dishes from Kanazawa. Each dish is a small work of art—carefully prepared and beautifully presented using a variety of decorative and compositional techniques. All ingredients are selected with great attention to quality and freshness.
