For centuries, geishas welcomed their guests in tea houses. Part of the house was dedicated to entertaining visitors with conversation, dance, and music, while the other part served as living quarters. Young girls entered this world as trainees, initially becoming maiko (apprentice geishas) before eventually practicing their art as fully qualified geishas, often living in the same rooms.
In the Higashi Chaya district of Kanazawa, several historic tea houses have been preserved. In some of them, geisha caretakers still welcome visitors and perform cultural demonstrations for those wishing to experience their traditions.
During this daytime tour, you will have the opportunity to explore the interior of one of these tea houses. An experienced guide—the tea house owner—will lead you through the rooms, explaining the lives of its past residents. You will see household items and geisha accessories, and at the end of the tour, enjoy a traditional matcha tea served with Japanese sweets (wagashi).
