Murin-an was built between 1894 and 1896 as the villa of Yamagata Aritomo, a statesman of the Meiji and Taisho eras. The villa consists of three buildings: the scenic garden, the main building, a Western-style guest house, and a tea room. The traditional Japanese garden, with its small pond, trees, and unusual moss, impresses with its unique beauty.
Among the villas in the Nanzenji area, this is the only garden open to the public year-round, and in 1951 it was designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty. On the second floor of the Western-style building is the room where the Murin-an Conference took place, where notable Japanese politicians Ito Hirobumi and Yamagata Aritomo discussed diplomatic policy before the start of the Russo-Japanese War.
Take a walk through the garden, enjoy a cup of hot tea, and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of Meiji-era Japan.
