Summer Riverside Terraces in Kibune

Summer Riverside Terraces in Kibune

Prices start from $482 per person

In Japan, it is customary to escape the summer heat by the water or in the mountains. For those visiting Japan on hot days, we invite you to relax in Kibune, a small village located on the banks of a mountain river north of Kyoto. The local restaurant Hirobun is famous throughout the area for its riverside terraces that create a refreshing atmosphere—on the bamboo platform you can dip your feet directly into the rushing river, cascading down in small waterfalls.

Hirobun is also one of the best places to try catching nagashi somen—noodles flowing down a bamboo chute, which you need to grab with chopsticks and eat after dipping them in a special sauce.

For those who prefer a proper meal, the chefs prepare a kaiseki lunch with river fish and fresh vegetables from nearby farms, or offer shabu-shabu with eel, as eel is traditionally eaten in Japan during the summer.

After lunch, we will take a walk through the charming village to the Kibune Shrine, dedicated to the god of water and protector of the seas. A picturesque stone staircase lined with red lanterns leads to the main hall of the shrine. Climbing it, surrounded by wild greenery, feels like stepping into a fairytale. At the shrine, you can also try your luck with mizuura mikuji fortune-telling. For a small fee, you will receive a magical scroll that must be dipped in the sacred spring for the prediction, written in special ink, to appear.

Come to Kibune and spend an unforgettable summer day in this mountain village of Japan.

Opening hours: 11:00–16:00
Terraces are open from early May to the end of September.
