Discover the timeless art of ukiyo-e, the traditional Japanese woodblock printing technique that has fascinated the world for centuries. Creating an ukiyo-e print is a collaborative process involving the artist, the carver, and the printer. First, the artist sketches a design with ink on fine paper. The carver then transfers the design onto a wooden block, carefully carving the sections that will later hold different colors. Finally, the printer applies natural mineral or vegetable pigments to the carved blocks and hand-prints the image onto dampened rice paper.
We offer two levels of difficulty:
- Beginner Level – A small group session (3 people), lasting 30 minutes in total (10 minutes per person). You’ll work with three colors to create a woodblock print depicting the distinctive makeup of Kabuki theater actors.
- Intermediate Level – For groups of three or more, lasting 30–45 minutes in total (10–15 minutes per person). You’ll use four colors to create a print featuring Osaka’s charming Hozenji Yokocho alley, a city girl in kimono, and finely detailed designs such as kimono patterns and cobblestone streets.
