One of the best experiences you can have in Kyoto is learning to cook like the locals. Why not try a Japanese cooking class at a culinary workshop in Kyoto? You will learn about dashi (soup stock), Japanese seasonings, and some typical dishes. In addition, you’ll have the opportunity to learn more about Kyoto and Japan through conversations with friendly instructors.
The Kyoto cooking school offers daily classes: a bento course in the morning (9:30–12:30) and an izakaya lesson in the afternoon (14:00–17:00).
The morning “Bento” class is an excellent way to discover classic Japanese dishes such as sushi, tempura, and miso soup. For 2.5 to 3 hours, the chefs will demonstrate and explain the techniques for preparing these delicious meals, and then you will be able to taste them. After cooking, you’ll enjoy the bento lunch that you have prepared yourself.
The afternoon “Izakaya” lesson will give you insight into authentic and popular dishes eaten at home and in local restaurants. The course is divided into two parts. First, you will cook 2–3 dishes, such as basic dashi, fried chicken with plums and shiso leaves. Then, you’ll return to the kitchen to learn how to prepare another 2–3 small plates, such as pumpkin soup with miso paste and dandelion dumplings. Enjoy a culinary experience in a cozy atmosphere, similar to Japan’s izakayas.
